Issue title: "Jade Knight"

Summary

• Alan Scott wakes up in the middle of the crash and wanders to a green light
• The light tells him that it is the power of the Earth and that he's the chosen one to contain the power the light contains
• Jay/Flash and Kendra/Hawkgirl are talking for a bit when Kendra randomly attacks him
• Jay and Kendra go at it for a minute til she takes Jay down and then helps him up
• Jay agrees to team up with Kendra (kind of) as "everything" is dying
• Back with Alan, he agrees to take the mantle of Green Lantern
• We see him in his pretty badass-looking GL outfit
• Meanwhile an unseen enemy notices that the Green has chosen a champion (Alan) and "in the name of the Grey" he must awaken
• He is killing everything in Virginia
• Alan and the light form his engagement ring that he was gonna use to propose to Sam (who's dead, bee-tee-dubs) into a GL ring
• Alan saves the survivors from the train crash and swears that everything he does as Green Lantern will be in Sam's honor
• Meanwhile, the Grey's champion kills stuff in Washington, D.C. and we see its Solomon Grundy(!!!!!!)

Thoughts

I have almost no issues here, minus one: Alan got over Sam really quick. But maybe that's just me, because I've never lost someone as close as my fiancee-to-be and then have a Green Light claim it's the Earth's energy and give me all it's power. Soooo yeah. This issue was amazing nonetheless and frickin' Solomon Grundy is the villain!!! That made up for the Sam thing. Green Lantern. Flash. Hawkgirl. Solomon Grundy. That's enough of a great cast to make an amazing book. 10/10

Earth-2 #2 Review! SPOILERS AHEAD!

So...wow. I already read this issue and I can't pick my jaw up off the floor from that cliffhanger. Let me just say this even before we get into things: GO BUY THIS ISSUE RIGHT NOW. ITS WORTH THE $2.99. Even if you didn't get the first issue of the series for whatever reason, go buy this issue right now. Like shut down your computer and buy it this very moment. 1,000% worth it. Believe me. But anyway... I must warn you that I am so hyped up about this issue that there will be a fair amount of spoilers coming, so don't read this if you are planning on buying this issue in the foreseeable future. So...yeah. Below this line, the spoilers begin!

Summary

• Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, appears on a street in NYC and realizes he isn't in Kansas anymore. Kansas being Earth-1, of course
• Some guy named Terry Sloan (who, it turns out, was the original Mr. Terrific in the old continuity at least...) addresses him as "Mr. Holt" even though he's in his Mr. Terrific get-up and just arrived there
• Mr. Sloan says he's going to have to take down Mr. Terrific for things that he is going to do
• Michael goes on the offensive and attacks but Sloan turns the attack right around on him, knocking Michael out(!!!)
• Mercury and Jay Garrick are talking about how Mercury is the last of the Gods and that he is dying
• Merc warns Jay that a new threat is coming, but Jay tells him all the heroes of Earth are dead (as seen in #1)
• Jay insists that if they get Merc to a hospital soon, they can save him from death, but Merc decides to shoot him with some lightning(!!), turning him into the Flash
• The World Army shows up
• Flash runs
• We see Alan Scott, still over in China, with his boyfriend Sam
• Back in New York, Jay is walking around secretively, as Merc had told him to not trust anyone
• Jay starts running around and he comes across a couple getting attacked by some crazy rats and saves them
• He runs off right after and begins using his powers to a higher extent, but then he stops in Poland
• Hawkgirl appears
• Back to Alan and Sam, they're on a train going to some cabin in the woods
• Alan proposes that Sam come and live in the U.S. with him (since he apparently lives in China) and that they get married
• The train blows up with a green glow inside the explosion

Thoughts

I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this series. I re-read the first issue right before I started reading this one and I enjoyed it just as much as I did last month and this issue was just as much up to those standards. At first, Jay's design seemed kind of forced but as the issue progressed, Nicola Scott's Jay Garrick became a lot more fluid and interesting, but at the same time it might just be because I've never seen the suit in action before. My only real problem with this issue is that they have seemingly "fridged" Sam so early into the series. I can't believe that. Maybe the green glow was Alan lighting up and protecting himself and his boyfriend. I'm really glad that Mister Terrific is going to be in this series, and not in his own. While his old series wasn't good, he can potentially make new fans and have his old fans come over to Earth-2. Overall, I give this issue a 10/10, just like last month.

And the New Gay Character is...ALAN SCOTT!

It's official, folks! DC has announced that Alan Scott, the Green Lantern featured in Earth-2 will be the new gay super-hero. My three favorite non-blog comic websites, Comic Book Resources, Comic Vine, and Newsarama have already gotten interviews with James Robinson (writer of Earth-2) posted on their website. 

The series, written by James Robinson and penciled by Nicola Scott, has put out one issue out thusfar and came as part of the New 52's "Second Wave" of titles. I really enjoyed the first issue, even gave it a 10/10 in my review so I'm really excited for the second issue to come out ANYWAY even without this announcement. 

There was many speculations as to what hero will have their sexual orientation changed. And James Robinson said that it was his decision, since he wasn't going to be allowed to use Obsidian or Jade (which was learned in the CBR interview) he decided to change Alan's orientation and apparently Didio just went along with it. Which, for once, I have to thank Dan Didio. YES, readers, I AM THANKING DAN DIDIO! I have to say that I'm not a fan of him and I've expressed that several times over the last year or so. Don't worry, fans, I'm not losing my mind, but I am thankful for this decision. While I'm sure that many people will be thinking and maybe even saying "Ugh, why Alan Scott? Why not some new character?" I have to say that it gains more attention and it doesn't seem unnatural that Alan Scott would be gay. I really hope that I get the chance to speak with James Robinson and/or Nicola Scott sometime soon (as I have in the past with Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth). 

Earth-2/Justice Society Unconfirmed Cast

 

Wildcat-Ted Grant-Unconfirmed Character/Soon-to-be-Active
Ted Grant, in the pre-New 52 Universe, was always a member of the "Big 3" for the JSA (alongside Jay Garrick & Alan Scott). He helped shape the next generation of heroes by training them in boxing, as he was the world champion for a long time. It is very likely that Ted will be making an appearance and likely joining the Justice Society when the team is formed. He will likely be the World Champion in boxing when he introduced to the story. Neither he nor his son have been seen in the New 52.

 

Dr. Fate-Hector Hall-Unconfirmed Character/Soon-to-be-Active

Hector Hall was also one of the original JSA-ers back in the 1940s.  He is the person in charge of the Fate helmet which is one of, if not, the most powerful mystical weapons of all time. It would also be a good way to tie into something that happens with the Trinity of Sin on Earth-1(? Prime?). He is also one of my favorite Earth-2 characters and I really hope for him to be in there.

 Hourman-Rex Tyler or Rick Tyler-Referenced but Unconfirmed/Soon-to-be-Active

The only type of confirmation we've seen about either Rex or Rick Tyler is Joan (Jay Garrick's ex-girlfriend) mentioning her job in Los Angeles at Tyler-Chem. Obviously this is an easy way to keep Joan in the series and introduce Rex/Rick into the series. Very simple and very obvious. Kind of like Alan Scott's referencing his trip to China. 

Wonder Girl/Wonder Woman/(Just plain old) Donna Troy-Donna Troy-Unconfirmed, but hinted/Soon-to-be-Active
The only possible hint that we've gotten that she may be a character in the series is James Robinson stating that Diana wasn't ACTUALLY the last Amazon and that we will see more Amazons soon. Hopefully, we can get Donna Troy back. And if we can get Donna back, Wally West and Stephanie Brown can't be far behind, right!?

There are several other ones, but these are the main characters that I definitely want to see coming from this series.

Earth-2/Justice Society Cast

Superman-Kal-DECEASED

In the first issue of Earth-2, Superman is KIA fighting parademons while buying Batman time to finally win the war against Apokolips. He is seemingly blown up by a boom tube.

Wonder Woman-Diana-DECEASED

Alongside Superman, Wonder Woman also died at the hands of Darkseid’s soldiers, except she was killed more personally than Superman. She was killed by Steppenwolf. Her powers are apparently based from the Roman, rather than the Greek, Gods.

Batman-Bruce-DECEASED

He died winning the war against Apokolips by blowing up the towers and destroying the parademons along with them. His daughter is Helena Wayne (aka Robin/Huntress), and he also has a Dick Grayson-esque look, but we definitely know that Bruce was Batman. 

The Flash-Jay Garrick-Soon-to-be-Active

Jay is a 21-year-old who just graduated from college, but his girlfriend left him to move to Los Angeles to work at Tyler-Chem (See: Rex Tyler aka Hourman). He has been claimed to be an “everyman” and the narrator of the series as a whole. We will see the stories through his eyes. His powers of super-speed will be coming from the Roman God, Mercury, tying his origin into Wonder Woman’s history.

Green Lantern-Alan Scott-Soon-to-be-Active

Alan seems to be doing very well for himself, seeing as he is a CEO of a seemingly-major corporation. He is on his way to China as of #1, which is, in his Pre-New 52 origin, where he attained his GL lantern and ring. He has been described at the “Superman” of the modern E-2 stories as the leader and most heroic of the group. Although the cover to #3 does show him burning alive. Not a good start.

Hawkgirl-Kendra Saunders-Soon-to-be-Active

We do not know anything about Kendra other than what her outfit will look like and the fact that she will seemingly tote dual pistols with her. She seems to be of Native American nationality by the fact that there are beads in her hair and that her hawk outfit has taken on much similarities to a real hawk and the facial paint on her cheeks. But we do know that she, since Batman’s death, is going to become the World’s Greatest Detective.

The Atom-Sgt. Al Pratt-Soon-to-be-Active

All we know about Al thusfar is that he was in the first issue as part of a military squad delivering the “back-up-plan” in case Batman’s plan didn’t work. He is extremely short. But beyond that, we do not know anything about the manner of his powers (or if he will even have any) and what he has been doing for the 5 years since Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman won the Apokolips War.

Mr. Terrific-Michael Holt-Active

The only thing that I know about the New 52 Mr. Terrific is that he is from the “Main” Earth and in the last panel of his final issue, he was sucked into a portal, seemingly into the Multiverse. He has been confirmed to be on Earth-Two now so we'll find out how he is going to fit in soon enough!

Earth-2 #1 Review!

Earth-2 #1

Summary

The issue opens with us being introduced to an Earth-2 that has been taken over by parademons, with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin (Helena Wayne), and Supergirl (Karen Starr) as the only heroes in the entire world. But Batman has a plan to take down the parademons and all it will take to execute is Kal & Diana giving him time to make sure it gets followed-through. We quickly find out that not only is Diana the last of the Amazons, but that Kal has lost Lois. Bruce keeps on pushing through to a tower that is apparently controlling the parademons. We find out that Supergirl is patrolling the troops that are leading the back-up plan to nuke all sites that have parademon tower things if Batman's plan fails. Kal, Diana, and Bruce all fight as an amazing team. We hear more about Bruce's plan as he was telling it to Diana and Kal. Then, Mercury (yes, the God Mercury) appears to tell Diana that the Gods are dying and that he will likely die in the battle, too. So Diana becomes enraged and begins fighting extra hard against a whole horde of parademons, when out of nowhere Steppenwolf (who apparently was leading the parademons) appears and kills Diana(!?!?!?!?!?). Kal declares that he will kill Steppenwolf, but he blows up Kal(!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?), killing him. Supergirl figures that out and flies to Metropolis to see what happened. Back in the tower that Bruce is inside of, he inserts a virus into the system and explains to Helena that once he inserts the virus it will blow up  all the towers including the one with Bruce inside(!!!). He activates it and boom boom goes the towers all across the world. Then a boom tube opens and has someone standing inside it. Helena & Karen fly into the tube and that's where it leads into Worlds' Finest #1 (which I'll review later). Then we cut to Alan Scott who was narrating the issue from his own little iPad-looking device. Apparently it's the 5th anniversary since they saved the world. Alan is flying to China and he mentions "What's left of Italy" and then we see a bunch of gaping holes. We then cut to Michigan where we see Jay Garrick's girlfriend leaving him for the west coast saying that all he will ever be to her is a few happy memories. Then he's sitting there on a hill drinking some drink talking about how his life sucks when Mercury(!!!) crash-lands and says that the world doesn't have a hero, but it needs one, effectively ending a extremely amazing opening issue.

Thoughts

This issue was PERFECT!!! I loved everything about it!! The art was amazing, the dialogue was perfect, and I'm so glad we got to see Jay and Alan in this issue. I could feel Helena's heartache as she realized her dad was about to die and I couldn't help but laugh at Jay's expression when he first saw Mercury. This series is going to be AMAZING!! I cannot wait a month for the next issue...but it's better than waiting three months for the first. 10/10 easily.

Earth-Two #1 Preview! And my hopes for Earth-Two and Worlds' Finest

My Hopes for Earth-Two (and Worlds’ Finest)

1.       Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, Al Pratt, & Ted Grant-(3/4) CONFIRMED!

The main heroes of Earth-Two have always been the Golden Age heroes known as the Flash, Green Lantern, the Atom, and Wildcat respectively. They have been mentors to almost every single hero in the DCU Universe. Well…before the New 52. I have realized that all of them will be new(er) heroes when the series starts, but I hope that maybe that can be as inspiring as they were pre-Relaunch.

2.       Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman aren’t the “stars of the show”-UNCONFIRMED

The only previews from the new series show Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman fighting off hordes of para-demons. Which is a shame. I don’t care if they run the series at the beginning, but hopefully they will hand it over to Jay, Alan, etc. While I’m really interested in knowing their backstories and how they became who they are, I am not so interested that I would want to read it month after month for a long time. DC could accomplish the same thing (and please more fans) by creating a “Trinity” series instead.

3.       The Quality Stays Consistent-CONFIRMED! For the first 3 issues…

James Robinson and Paul Levitz are both very good writers and this series promises not only good, strong writing, but humorous and human writing as well. On the art side of the books, we see Nicola Scott, George Perez, and Kevin Maguire on art duties for the books. Nicola Scott’s art reminds me of Ivan Reis’ art a lot and he happens to be putting out the best New 52 artwork right now. Hopefully she can keep up with him. George Perez & Kevin Maguire are doing the art for Worlds’ Finest and I can’t wait to see it. They’re both industry legends, and I can’t wait for it.

4.       Familiar Faces-UNCONFIRMED

Thus far, we’ve seen Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash (Jay Garrick, not Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Alan Scott, not Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, or Kyle Rayner), Supergirl (later Power Girl), and Robin (later Huntress). But we haven’t seen designs for characters like Al Pratt (a.k.a. Atom) or Ted Grant (a.k.a. Wildcat) who have been claimed to be in the series but no signs have been shown. At least until we crack open the first few issues of Earth-Two. It'd be nice to see other characters appear like Stargirl, Atom Smasher, Damage, etc.  As for Worlds’ Finest, we don’t know if the two girls will be introduced to other heroes from the New 52 Earth or not. I sure hope we are. I would love to see the two girls fight alongside the JLI (or just Booster Gold), New 52-Batman, etc. Plus if there are any Crisis’ while the girls are around, they will surely be involved.

Newsarama Interview with James Robinson on EARTH 2

So... today Newsarama posted an interview with the writer of the upcoming EARTH 2 series, James Robinson. Since I already linked to it in this article, I'll just post the basic summary that Newsarama put at the top of the article, and the cover to #2, which shows the Earth-2 version of Jay Garrick!

In our interview, Robinson revealed that:

- This is a complete reboot of the Earth 2 concept.

- Earth 2 has a "five-year jumping on point like the main DCU Earth" for its superhero story.

- The story of issue #1 begins with a few characters (including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman) who are "gripped" in a dire situation. But then an "event" happens, and "out of that conflict," some familiar faces begin to "take the mantles of superheroes in the future."

- Jay Garrick is the "everyman" through which readers are introduced to the world of Earth 2. While the name Jay Garrick may be familiar to older DC readers as the elderly Golden Age Flash, in this comic, he's younger, as seen in our exclusive art for the cover of Earth 2 #2.

- Alan Scott and Al Pratt are also key characters in the story of Earth 2.

- Robinson said: "It isn't the Justice Society. It's Earth 2. So it's going to be a whole world of different characters."

- The comic also introduces different versions of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, but Robinson said Earth 2 is an "ensemble" book, and doesn't just focus on the Trinity. (For previously released information on those three Earth 2 characters, see our summary here.)

- The first issue also includes Helena Wayne as Robin, and Karen Starr as Supergirl, before they somehow end up on the main DCU Earth as Huntress and Power Girl (as seen in the current Huntress mini-series and May's World's Finest).

- The differences between the main DCU Earth and Earth 2 are not traceable to one easy explanation (such as, "they lost the war").

- Fans of Wally West and Donna Troy should not expect to see them on Earth 2, because Robinson said he doesn't know what the plans are for those characters.

- Although Parademons show up on the first variant cover to Earth 2, don't expect to see Darkseid (keep reading for Robinson's cryptic explanation of that).

- DC and its writers have a tough time figuring out what to call the main DCU Earth. Robinson originally used terms like "Earth One" and "Earth Prime," but Newsarama inquired with DC editorial and was told that Robinson should have used "main DCU Earth." This is the second time a DC writer accidentally used the wrong name for the main DCU Earth in an interview with Newsarama.

May Cover Analysis #1: EARTH TWO #1 Ivan Reis Variant Cover

Okay so earlier today, DC released Ivan Reis' variant cover for EARTH TWO #1, which I linked to.

The cover (as seen above), shows Earth-2 version of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman fighting off Parademons. The suits are all very different than the "normal" suits.

Initial Thoughts
Fuck. This shows the REAL "Big Three" rather than the JSA's "Big Three." AND they're fighting off fuckin Parademons! Isn't the Justice League finishing that up like this month?? WHAT??

Thoughts After
Wait. Batman is using those little stick thingies that Nightwing used to use. Hmmm... And they all seem extremely young. Does this mean that they are like the sons/daughters/protegees of the "First Generation" of heroes? So this could be Dick, Donna, and some new Superboy? Maybe Conner? They did say something about this being the "new" generation of the JSA. Maybe the "new generation" Flash would be WALLY FUCKIN WEST!? YES YES YES. PLEASE LET THAT BE SO.

While they're still fighting Parademons (sadly), I will definitely be buying this series. Maybe JL #6 will somehow show that the Parademons get released into the Multiverse? That wouldn't be an awful idea.


So...yeah
I'm kind of sad that they aren't showing any additional heroes like Dr. Fate, Flash, Green Lantern, etc. But I'll live. This series should still be great. I know I wasn't a fan of James Robinson's JLA run, but I think this will be able to fix all the bad. I mean honestly he didn't write a bad story. He was left with a League that didn't have Batman (Bruce Wayne), Superman, or Wonder Woman. Let alone any other major heroes. But he wrote a good Jade, Dick, Donna, Jesse, etc. Who ALL happen to be part of the (old) DCU "new" generation of heroes! So quite honestly I would love to read a series that STARS a basically younger generation of the Earth-2 heroes that Geoff Johns created/made important during his JSA run, as long as the "original" JSA (Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, Ted Grant, etc.) are all there in the background.

I think that this series will be absolutely amazing. James Robinson is a great writer, and Nicola Scott is a great artist. It should be a very good series, and this cover is amazing artwork, which is always what comes from Ivan Reis. I love the Batman and Wonder Woman outfits. They're both pretty damn badass. Just sayin.

DC HAS to Release Earth-2 or Worlds' Finest Cover Today!

Over the past few days, DC has begun releasing the covers of their "Second Wave" titles.
Tuesday kicked off with BATMAN INCORPORATED, Wednesday starred G.I. COMBAT, and then Thursday featured THE RAVAGERS. Of course, DIAL H's cover was shown when the wave was announced. This leaves only two series without covers... EARTH-2 and WORLDS' FINEST!

So I'm guessing that today, DC will be releasing the covers of AT LEAST one of the two titles today. Recently, George Perez posted an image on his facebook "like" page with some head-sketches of Huntress and Power Girl. He had just finished the pencils (and I think the inking, too?) for the cover, but he wasn't allowed to show it. I'm guessing that by now, the cover should be finished. But considering I've seen one of Perez's character sketches, I am much more interested for the EARTH-2 cover.

But just for poops and laughs (ha. get it? like shits and giggles? ...fine. I'll just finish the post. :P haha) I'll give you the links to the over covers released this week. I would just have put them in this post, but my blogger is still acting weird and not letting me add any.

Upcoming Ongoings: Worlds' Finest & Earth-2

So, as it was recently announced by DC, a "Second Wave" of titles will be released in May, following six of the... "First Wave"(?) titles getting cancelled.

As I said, I'm very excited for at least two of the new series...specifically the ones focusing on Earth-2!

I can't wait for Power Girl to be returning to the position of a starring role in an ongoing series. I had been hoping to, before the relaunch, go out and get some new series and Power Girl was one of them.

Worlds Finest

Worlds Finest will be starring Power Girl and Huntress. This is also coming from the "Huntress" mini-series Paul Levitz did, which I believe is finishing up this month. Apparently it will show Karen and Helena meeting. I'm down with that. I might actually pick up the last issue just to see that, despite the fact that I'll probably be confused as fuck. Haha.

I can't wait for this series, though. Two displaced heroes (badass heroes, might I add?) and I'm hoping we see some kind of interaction with Earth-1's heroes. And eventually, they'll obviously end up on Earth-2 again. And maybe once they're back on Earth-2, they'll have brought Mr. Terrific and Hawkman back with them? I wouldn't mind that. Assuming there aren't already Earth-2 versions of the heroes. But I definitely have VERY high hopes for this series and expect to subscribe to it before I even read the first issue.

Earth-2

James Robinson and Nicola Scott are bringing back the JSA in, hopefully, an unexpected way. I'm hoping that we see Golden Age Superman, Batman, & Wonder Woman. Along with Dr. Fate, the Spectre, Sandman, the Atom (not Ray Palmer sadly) & so many other Golden Age characters. But most of all? I want the Golden Age Green Lantern, Flash, and Wildcat. That's right. The "Big Three" of the JSA.

I would like to see, as crazy as it sounds, Earth-2 be a $3.99 title. Maybe we toss in the "original" JSA back in WW2 as a second-feature. But in the "main" time we see the new iteration of the JSA fighting current threats. But most likely, we're going to get a mainstream story that costs $2.99 with most of the "normal" JSA on the line-up. Dr. Fate, Wildcat, Green Lantern, Flash, etc.


So are you looking forward to these two series? I certainly am. They should be very cool titles. I cannot wait.
